      A Life Between Two Shores

The life of José Bouchet Blanco began in the small Galician village of Xanza, within the province of Pontevedra. Born in 1848, his early years were shaped by a family history marked by movement and displacement; his father was a Frenchman who had been taken prisoner during the Battle of Ponte Sampaio in 1809. This sense of transition followed him into childhood when he emigrated to Argentina with his parents. It was in this new landscape that his artistic identity began to take root, far from the rugged coast of his birth.

His training was a blend of local mentorship and international refinement. In Argentina, he became a disciple of the Uruguayan painter Juan Manuel Blanes, absorbing the foundational principles of his craft. Later, through a government scholarship, Bouchet sought further instruction in Florence, Italy, studying under Antonio Ciseri. This period of academic rigor allowed him to expand his horizons beyond the Americas, as his travels eventually took him through France, Spain, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the United States, and Chile.

      The Brush and the Border

Bouchet’s work often captured the historical and social textures of the regions he inhabited. He possessed a particular talent for portraiture and historical scenes, frequently utilizing oil on cardboard to render his subjects. His repertoire included significant depictions of Argentine history, such as:

      • La llegada de las carabelas a San Salvador
      • La primera misa-fundación de Buenos Aires de D. Juan de Garay
      • El ejército de los Andes saliendo del Plumerillo
      • El fusilamiento de Liniers
      • La batalla de Salta

Beyond these large-scale historical narratives, he found beauty in the everyday and the individual. His piece Un gaucho offers a glimpse into the life of the Argentine plains, while his portraits of figures like General Belgrano and Rosalía Castro de Murgía demonstrate his ability to capture character. Much of his output reached a wider audience through publication in various editions of the Almanaque Gallego between 1897 and 1917.

A Final Chapter in Buenos Aires

By the time he settled into his later years, Bouchet was deeply integrated into the cultural fabric of Buenos Aires. He was an active member of the artists' society La colmena and participated in the Centro Gallego de Buenos Aires, maintaining a connection to both his adopted home and his ancestral roots. His presence in the local art scene was marked by a steady commitment to his medium and his community.

When he passed away in Buenos Aires in 1919, he left behind a body of work held in significant institutions, including the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Museo Histórico Nacional in Argentina. His paintings remain part of the collections of the Diputación Provincial de A Coruña and various private holdings across Spain and Latin America, representing a life lived across continents.
