A Life Shaped by Light and Landscape

Born in Santiago de Cuba, José Joaquín Tejada Revilla grew up surrounded by the artistry of his family. His early interest in art began with the simple act of copying lithographs created by his grandfather, Joaquín de Mata y Tejada, a man known as one of Cuba's first engravers. This early connection to printmaking laid the foundation for a life dedicated to the canvas.

A government scholarship provided him with the opportunity to leave his home and study in the great art centers of Europe. He traveled through Spain, Italy, France, and the Netherlands, absorbing the techniques of different masters. These travels allowed him to witness firsthand the landscapes that would later define his own approach to painting. Upon returning to Cuba, he visited New York City, where he exhibited his work in 1894.

      The Influence of Faraway Lands

The textures and colors found in Tejada's work were shaped by much more than European academies. During the Cuban War of Independence, he sought refuge in Mexico for three years. This period of displacement brought him into contact with ancient Aztec art, an encounter that left a lasting mark on his color palette. He integrated these new perspectives into his existing training, creating a style that felt both grounded and unique.

His landscapes often reflect the quiet, naturalistic approach of the Barbizon school. He had a particular talent for capturing the essence of the land, a skill that earned him praise from notable figures like José Martí. While his eyes were trained on the horizon, his work remained deeply connected to the Cuban soil.

A Legacy in Santiago de Cuba

Beyond his time as a traveling student and refugee, Tejada was a central figure in the artistic community of his native city. He took on significant responsibilities, serving as a Professor and the Director of the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts in Santiago de Cuba. His leadership extended to the presidency of the Artistic Association of Oriente and he helped found the Congreso de Arte.

His contributions to Cuban art can be seen in several notable achievements:

      • He taught many future artists, including the Dominican painter Celeste Woss y Gil.
      • His painting La Lista de la Loteria is a permanent fixture at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana.
      • He contributed essays to the journal Luz de Oriente, sharing his thoughts on the craft of painting and printmaking.

Tejada's work remains held in important collections, such as the Museo Bacardí in Oriente and the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach, Florida. He lived and worked in Santiago de Cuba for much of his life, leaving behind a body of work that connects the traditions of Europe with the spirit of the Caribbean.
