      Early Life and Artistic Training

Jozef Kornúcik entered the art world through a rigorous technical foundation in Bratislava. Born on January 20, 1938, in Snina, Slovakia, his early development was shaped by the structured environments of the city's most significant art institutions. He began his formal training between 1954 and 1958 at the School of Applied Arts, where he focused on the graphic design department. This period established the technical discipline required for his later, more expansive explorations of form and medium.

His progression into higher academic study took him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava from 1958 to 1964. It was here that Kornúcik moved beyond the constraints of graphic design into the realm of monumental painting. He studied under Professor Peter Matejka in the monumental painting department, a period that would define his ability to handle large-scale compositions and architectural integration. This training provided the structural knowledge necessary for a career that would eventually span textiles, mosaics, and ceramics.

      Artistic Style and Diverse Techniques

Kornúcik’s visual language was defined by a deliberate tension between form and surface. His early output focused on stylized figurative scenes, utilizing expressive forms and a distinct flatness to command attention. He relied on pronounced color to drive his compositions, moving away from traditional depth in favor of a more direct, graphic impact. This approach was not merely a stylistic choice but a technical one; he frequently employed a paint spray gun to apply pigment, a method specifically intended to eliminate individual handwriting and personal brushwork from the surface. This pursuit of a controlled, impersonal finish allowed the geometry and color to exist without the distraction of the artist's hand.

His technical range extended far beyond the canvas. He was a prolific creator of monumental works designed for architectural integration, working across a wide variety of demanding media. His output included mosaics, enamels, ceramics, and concrete compositions, as well as large-scale textile works. This versatility allowed him to move between the rigid requirements of structural design and the more fluid possibilities of etched glass. Even in his more intimate studies, such as his charcoal drawings, the precision of his vision remained evident.

As his career progressed into the 1970s, his focus shifted toward lyrical landscapes. These later works moved away from the strictures of his earlier "large geometries" and rational geometry, favoring a more atmospheric interpretation of the natural world. This evolution demonstrates a capacity to pivot from the highly controlled, spray-painted surfaces of his mid-career to a more sensitive, observational mode of painting.

      Key Works and Major Exhibitions

Kornúcik’s presence on the international stage was cemented in 1966 at the XXXIII Venice Biennale. He represented the Slovak portion of the production there, presenting his work Dedinská matka. This piece demonstrated his ability to handle large-scale textile compositions alongside his contemporaries. His early output also included Rybí vták, created between 1959 and 1960, which showcased his capacity for stylized figurative scenes characterized by expressive forms and a distinct use of color.

The artist’s evolution took a sharp turn toward rational geometry following his move to Košice. This period saw the development of his "large geometries," a series that moved away from purely figurative concerns toward a more structured, spatial logic. Around 1967, he also produced Záznamy 1-60, a cycle of charcoal drawings on paper or created through mixed techniques, which highlighted a more graphic, investigative side of his practice.

      Later Years and Disappearance

After completing his formal education, Kornúcik settled in Košice. This period marked a significant phase of his creative output, where he established himself within the local art scene. His presence in the city was central to his professional identity as he moved between various mediums and large-scale commissions.

The trajectory of his life was abruptly cut short. In 1976, at the age of 39, Kornúcik disappeared. His absence left a void in the contemporary Slovak art landscape, and despite efforts to locate him, he remained missing. The uncertainty surrounding his disappearance lasted until the Municipal Court in Košice intervened. The court officially established his date of death as 20.01.1977.
