      A Life in Flemish Art

Michael Angelo Immenraet was a Flemish history and portrait painter. Born in Antwerp, he was the son of a German piano builder. His artistic legacy is most notably defined by a lavish Baroque painting series of biblical scenes created for the Unionskirche in Idstein, Germany. This significant commission, which he worked on between 1673 and 1678, involved the production of 38 oil on canvas paintings for the church ceiling. For this undertaking, Immenraet worked alongside his pupil or assistant, Johann Caspar Bencard.

His professional life included registration in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1663. In 1661, he contributed to the decoration of the 'Hofje van Nieuwkoop' in The Hague, where he painted a chimney piece featuring a double portrait of Odilia and Philippina Maria van Wassenaer. These figures were depicted as shepherdesses within an Arcadian landscape. Immenraet's later years are less documented, and he eventually died in Utrecht.

      Artistic Themes and Works

The oeuvre of Immenraet encompasses allegorical, history, religious, and genre scenes, as well as portraits. His most prominent works are the ceiling paintings for the Unionskirche, Idstein, commissioned by Johann of Nassau-Idstein. These works represent biblical stories as living realities, with figures dressed in courtly Baroque garments. The series utilizes Baroque optical illusionism to direct the viewer's gaze from the altar toward the back of the church, featuring subjects such as:

      • The Transfiguration
      • The Elevation of the Holy Cross
      • The Resurrection
      • The Deposition
      • The Ascension
      • The Vision of St. John on Patmos

Other notable compositions include the 1661 double portrait of Odilia and Philippina Maria van Wassenaer as shepherdesses. His work in the Unionskirche also includes The Wedding at Cana on the south wall, a composition inspired by the work of Rubens.
