      Early Life, Family and Training

Orazio Alfani was born near Perugia, Italy, around 1510. His early years were shaped by the presence of his father, the painter Domenico Alfani. It was under his father's guidance that Orazio Alfani first learned the technicalities of his craft, absorbing the habits and methods of a working painter in the Umbrian tradition. This early apprenticeship established a lineage of craftsmanship that would continue into the next generation, as his son, also named Orazio Alfani, would eventually follow in his footsteps as a painter.

The training Orazio Alfani received was rooted in the practical realities of the Renaissance workshop. He did not work in isolation but was part of a family practice where the tools and techniques of painting were passed down through direct observation and practice. This foundation in his native Perugia provided the essential skills required for his later movements between different cities and his eventual work in various religious and civic settings.

      Activity in Palermo and Perugia

His career moved between the landscapes of Sicily and Umbria. In 1539, he traveled to Palermo to work at the Cathedral. This period in Sicily lasted several years, during which he contributed to the religious life of the island. By 1544, he had left the Sicilian coast and returned to his home region of Perugia.

Back in Perugia, his presence in the local art scene grew. He did not merely paint; he helped shape how art was taught in the city. In 1573, he joined the architect Raffaello Sozi to found the Accademia del Disegno. This institution, the Academy of Drawing, eventually became the Accademia di Belle Arti Pietro Vannucci, maintaining a continuous presence in the city's educational life.

      Key Works and Style

The brushwork of Orazio Alfani carries the weight of the Mannerist influence found in the works of Rosso Fiorentino and Raffaellino del Colle. His compositions often move with a specific tension, a characteristic of the era's shifting sensibilities. In 1549, he painted The mystical marriage of Saint Catherine, a work that captures a quiet, focused moment between the Madonna, the Child, and the saint. The scene depicts the infant Jesus offering a wedding ring to Saint Catherine, while Saint Francis and Saint Antony of Padua observe from the sides.

His handling of religious subjects shows a steady hand in both large-scale frescoes and smaller altarpieces. Around 1551, he produced a series of detached frescoes that now reside in the Galleria Nazionale. These figures, including St. Dominic, St. Francis, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Sebastian, and God the Father, were originally part of the decorative program of San Valentino. The way these figures are arranged suggests a careful attention to the spatial requirements of the niches they once occupied.

In 1553, he turned his attention to the Crucifixion, depicting the central event alongside the figures of saints. This period of his work shows a commitment to the formal demands of religious commissions, whether working on the walls of a church or on wooden panels. His output reflects a life spent navigating the specific needs of the churches in Perugia and Palermo, translating theological narratives into visual form through a lens shaped by the Mannerist tradition.
