      The Ink and the Exile

The life of Puzant Topalian began in the bustling atmosphere of Aïntab, in Asia Minor, where the early light of 1902 saw the birth of a child destined to navigate the turbulent currents of history. As the second of five children born to Hovhannês and Sandoukht, his childhood was shaped by the disciplined education of the Nersessian Armenian College. Yet, the stability of youth was shattered by the tragedies of 1915. The family was forced into exile, fleeing the horrors of the Armenian Genocide to find a precarious refuge in Aleppo, Syria. It was in this displacement that the young boy’s hand first found its way to the pencil, seeking to capture the silhouettes of the Aleppo citadel and the sweeping, dusty landscapes that surrounded his new, uncertain home.

In the shadow of upheaval, the necessity of survival turned a budding talent for drawing into a practical mastery of the printing press. The closure of schools meant that his education would be found not in a classroom, but within the rhythmic clatter of the printing house. He learned the delicate mechanics of typography and the heavy weight of the press, an apprenticeship that would forever link his visual sensibilities with the written word.

A Life of Letters and Lines

As he matured in Aleppo, Topalian’s creative spirit expanded through a series of collaborative ventures that sought to preserve and project his culture through print. He was a man of many roles, moving between the precision of the typographer and the vision of the editor. His hands were constantly engaged in the labor of creation, whether through the ink of a newspaper or the pigment of a painting.

His professional life was marked by several significant endeavors:

      • The publication of the collagraph print newspaper Dzaghig alongside Avedis Der Sahagian and Antranig Bulbulian.
      • The creation of the newspaper Meghou, which he published between 1923 and 1925.
      • The founding of the Arax publishing house in 1925 with his brother, Hampartsoum.
      • His tenure as the director of the Datev yearbook in 1926.

These years were a period of intense productivity, where the boundaries between the editor, the printer, and the artist began to blur. He was not merely a man who made images, but a man who built the vessels through which images and stories could survive the passage of time.

      The Final Chapters in France

The later years of his life saw a shift in geography, as the echoes of his past eventually led him toward Europe. After the loss of his parents and his brother, the path of his life moved away from the Levant, eventually finding a quiet conclusion in France. He settled in Deuil-la-Barre, in the Val-d'Oise, far from the sun-drenched hills of Aïntab and the crowded streets of Aleppo. He married Sona Markarian in Paris in 1948, a union that marked a chapter of stability in a life defined by movement and transition.

Though he was a man of many talents—a poet, a painter, and an editor—his legacy remains etched in the works that survived him. His presence is felt in the archives of the National Gallery of Armenia, Yerevan, where his undated untitled works remain as quiet witnesses to a life lived through the struggle of exile and the resilience of the creative spirit.
