A Life of Stone and Canvas

Vittorio Avondo lived much of his life within the quiet boundaries of Turin. Born in 1836, he moved through the world as both a painter and an antiquarian, often finding himself occupied with the physical preservation of the past. His training took him far from the Piedmontese hills, leading him through Tuscany, Switzerland, and France. In Switzerland, he sat before the works of Alexandre Calame to learn the nuances of the landscape. These travels left marks on his brushwork, bringing back a way of seeing that favored the natural light of the mountains and the soft textures of the earth.

His hands were often busy with more than just paint. He spent years tending to the bones of architecture, working to restore the Issogne Castle in Valle d’Aosta alongside others like Alfredo d'Andrade. He looked at the medieval neighborhoods of Turin and the Casa Cavassa in Saluzzo not merely as old structures, but as things requiring care and steady hands. This impulse to protect what was fading defined his later years, especially when he took up the direction of the Museo Civico in 1890.

      The Landscape of Piedmont

When he painted, Avondo turned his gaze toward his native Piedmont. His work often captured the stillness of a specific place, focusing on the landscapes that surrounded him. He was part of the School of Rivara, a group that shared an interest in the local terrain. His etchings and oils frequently depicted the movement of trees in the wind or the heavy shadows cast by a summer afternoon. In pieces like Campagna Romana, one can see the influence of his time spent in Rome between 1857 and 1865, where he captured the light of the Roman countryside through fine, etched lines.

The technique in his work often relied on a careful balance of light and shadow. He used etching to create deep, black shadows that gave weight to the branches of trees, a method that required a precise touch with the plate. His paintings, too, sought a certain naturalism. Whether working on canvas or wood panels, he focused on the quiet details of the land—the way a mountain slope meets the sky or how a figure might sit motionless in the grass. There is a sense of weight and presence in his landscapes, rooted in the actual soil of the regions he knew.

      A Legacy of Preservation

Beyond the studio, Avondo’s presence was felt in the civic life of Turin. He served as a city councillor and sat on commissions responsible for selecting works for the city's collections. His eye for detail helped shape the museum's holdings, ensuring that pieces were chosen with a sense of historical importance. When he passed away in 1910, much of what he had gathered and protected remained part of the city's identity.
