      Castle Caputh

The Architecture of a Princely Summer Residence

Situated on the southern bank of the Havel River, Castle Caputh exists as an early baroque complex within the Potsdam cultural landscape. The structure, built in 1662 by Philip de Chiese, underwent a significant transformation in 1671 when Princess Dorothea Sophie of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg expanded the building into a princely summer residence. It remains the oldest preserved pleasure palace from the era of the Great Elector Frederick William of Brandenburg. The estate is defined by its relationship to the water and the surrounding landscape, which was modeled on plans by Peter Joseph Lenné.

Inside, the atmosphere is shaped by the preservation of original 17th-century stuccowork and ceiling frescoes. These details remain in almost all the rooms, maintaining the high quality of interior design favored by royalty around 1700. The layout includes a banqueting hall, luxurious apartments, a ballroom, and royal apartments, all of which reflect the specific architectural language of the Brandenburg-Prussian style.

      The Presence of the Collection

The artworks held within these walls offer a direct encounter with the portraiture and genre painting of the 17th century. These pieces are not merely objects of study but are physical presences that occupy the spaces they were intended for. The collection includes works by several notable artists, each contributing to the historical weight of the rooms.

      A Landscape of History

The estate extends beyond the palace walls into a landscape of magnificent old trees. The Logierhaus, an outbuilding bordering the courtyard, serves as a functional link to the local community, housing the ticket office and regional products. The site remains a rare example of a palace that has survived through the ages almost unchanged, maintaining its original character despite the passage of three centuries. To walk through the courtyard is to move through a space where the 17th-century design still dictates the rhythm of the surroundings.
