Origins and History of the Museum

The Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen, Germany, traces its institutional roots to 1877 with the creation of the Aachener Museumsverein. This association laid the foundation for a dedicated space for art within the city. By 1883, a city museum had opened its doors within the Alte Redoute building, establishing a permanent presence for the collection in the urban landscape.

The museum was originally named the Suermondt Museum, named after its founder, Barthold Suermondt. His influence remains central to the institution's identity. In 1977, the name was changed to the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum to honor Irene and Peter Ludwig, whose contributions significantly shaped the museum's trajectory.

      The Building and its Architecture

The museum occupies the Villa Cassalette, a residence once owned by the Cassalette family, who were prominent factory owners in Aachen. Designed by the architect Eduard Linse, the villa is an expression of Renaissance Revival architecture. Its form draws inspiration from the palatial structures of Venice, creating a sense of presence within the city. The interior features a deliberate decorative program, including murals executed in the Pompeian style and ceilings adorned with stucco cassettes. These details provide a specific atmosphere for the works housed within the walls.

As the collection grew, the structure underwent several transformations. The building was slowly extended over the decades to accommodate the increasing number of acquisitions. This process of expansion continued through the twentieth century, including a significant addition designed by the architecture firm Busmann & Haberer between 1992 and 1994. This modern extension was built at the left side of the villa, allowing the institution to balance its historical core with contemporary spatial requirements.

      Major Collections and Artworks

The museum holds a distinction shared by only three other institutions in Germany: the possession of Spanish paintings. These works, including pieces by Jusepe de Ribera and Juan Sánchez Cotán, offer a specific study of light and shadow. Alongside these, the collection features German and Dutch panel paintings from the Late Gothic period. The presence of works by Aelbrecht Bouts and Joos van Cleve provides a window into the devotional art of that era. The museum is also recognized for its collection of medieval sculpture, which remains a central pillar of the holdings.

Glass painting is another significant element, spanning from the early Middle Ages through to the 20th century. This continuity allows for a direct observation of how light interacts with colored glass across different centuries. The collection also encompasses a range of later movements, with works by Anthony van Dyck, Otto Dix, and Max Beckmann represented within the permanent holdings. Each piece exists as a physical presence, from the delicate details of a still life to the heavy textures of modern expressionism.

      • Portrait of Aletta Lydius, 1677
      • St Jerome, 1548
      • The Smoker, 1630
      • Flowers in a Wan-Li Vase, 1620
      • Still life with Nautilus Cup, 1640
      • The Annunciation, 1500

      Major Acquisitions and Donations

The foundation of the collection rests upon the significant contributions of Barthold Suermondt, who provided the city with 105 paintings from his private holdings. This core was further enriched by the collection of Adèle Cockerill, whose works joined the museum's permanent holdings. Much of the current breadth of the museum is the result of a long-standing partnership with the Ludwig family; today, the institution houses approximately 300 donations and permanent loans originating from the Ludwig collection.

The museum's holdings also reflect the history of private connoisseurship, including pieces from the collection of Oberst Andreas Daniel Berthold von Schepeler. This collection, which was assembled in Spain between 1815 and 1832, brought important Spanish and Dutch works to Aachen. While many pieces from the Schepeler collection were moved to Berlin in 1874, several significant works remained in the city. Among these are:

      • The Kreuztragende Christus

The history of the collection includes periods of displacement and recovery. Following the Second World War, the museum successfully reclaimed two flower paintings that had been missing. These works, along with the various historical acquisitions, continue to define the specific character of the museum's holdings.

      Exhibitions and Visiting Information

The museum is situated at Wilhelmstrasse 18, 52070 Aachen. Visitors may enter the galleries from Tuesday to Wednesday between 13.00 and 17.00, or from Thursday through Sunday from 10.00 to 17.00. The doors remain closed on Mondays. Admission for the final hour of operation concludes at 16.30.

Current programming includes an exhibition focused on the works of Belgian and Dutch Romanticism from the 19th century. This selection offers a specific perspective on the artistic developments of that era. Additionally, the exhibition titled Tim Berresheim: Ort. Zeit. Kontinuum. remains on view until 13.12.2026.
