Linseed first. Always linseed first, before you see anything. Then turpentine underneath it, thinner and meaner.

The studio is a long room with north light coming through frosted industrial glass that has never once, I'd guess, seen actual north — the orientation is a habit copied from somewhere it mattered.

Canvases stand in a rack like plates in a drying board. Some blank, some a third finished, one drying face-out against the wall with a strip of masking tape and a job number instead of a title.

Nobody here is signing anything with a flourish. A woman at the nearest easel is laying in a sky, flat brush, right to left, and doesn't break the stroke when I walk past.

Three Production Lines, Divided By Tape on the Concrete

Line one: the general catalogue

Call it TopImpressionists's. It runs against a reference book so thick it has its own trolley: 448,947 works catalogued, 30,637 artists, 4,753 museums — a number pinned to the wall like a factory's safety-days counter.

Order any of them, in oil or in giclée, at any size you specify, and it gets made because you asked. Not before.

A rack of finished canvases waits near the packing bench, each with a customs form already filled in. The promise here, repeated on a laminated card taped to a support column, is free shipping worldwide — built into the price rather than bolted on at the register.

Line two: the one-of-one bench

Smaller. Quieter. Call it OriginalUniqueArt's.

Roughly 240 pieces, made by a roster of about twenty-five house artists — and the rule posted above this bench is different in kind from line one's:

Once a piece sells, it comes off the rack. Not restocked. Not reproduced.

A small brass tag can be added on request, and lately a code that lives on a blockchain rather than a wall — a certificate that doesn't need the wall at all, which is either the most modern object in the room or the most unnecessary, and I have genuinely not decided which.

Line three: the pop bench

Filtered hard to bold and post-1950. BuyPopArt's.

Same paints, same easels, same trolley of reference images — but curated down to a slice: graphic, saturated, nothing academic.

And none of them, I notice on closer look, has a job ticket clipped to it the way the sellable references do.

I ask why. The answer is one word, said without looking up:

One Order, Start to Finish

I follow a single job sheet from the intake tray to the shipping bench.

Klimt, The Kiss, oil, sized to the original's proportions: 63.2 by 62.8 centimetres.

The frame costs very nearly as much as the painting — which tells you exactly where the actual labour sits once gilding and joinery enter a job.

No separate shipping line. No customs surcharge pencilled in later. The number on the sheet is the number that leaves the building.

Scale it up and the shape holds

Every size, every medium, priced off one published sheet rather than an artist's mood that morning. Price grows with area but slightly slower than area, because a big flat sky takes proportionally less skill per square centimetre than a face does.

Faces, in fact, carry their own line: $25 for each one past the first — because a face is where a copyist's hours actually go, and the sheet says so rather than hiding it inside a vague word like premium.

Nothing here is bundled. Varnish is $15. Rushing the job is $30. Assigning it to a senior painter is $100.

You can read the entire cost of the object off one page. Which is not something I can say for most of what hangs in a commercial gallery, and it is the thing about this floor I like most.

The Klimt reference sheet, by the way, does have a job ticket clipped to it. Nobody died recently enough to protect it.

That distinction — dead long enough, dead not long enough — turns out to be the only thing standing between a reference image and a buy button anywhere on this floor.

Head to Head: Studios That Make It Versus Brokers That Don't

Three benches under this roof, and four independent houses doing the same job elsewhere. Note that none of these is a broker — everyone in this table makes the thing.

Two rows deserve a second look.

The lead-time column is where honesty lives in this trade. Five weeks. Four to six weeks. And then two "not published." A studio that will commit to a date in public is a studio confident about its own queue; one that won't is not necessarily lying, but it is asking you to plan a birthday around an unknown.

And the price spread on hand-painted oil is the whole industry in one line: £197 at one end, €1,084 at the other, for what the marketing describes identically. Nothing about that gap is quality. It is entirely about who holds the brush, for how many hours, in which country.

A Drift

I had a teacher once, a copyist by trade before he taught, who kept a jam jar of brushes worn down to stubs on his windowsill and would not let a student touch a synthetic-bristle brush on a Rembrandt copy — hog only, he said, because hog is what Rembrandt had, and a flat synthetic lays paint down with a discipline the original surface never had.

He spent four months on a single three-quarter portrait, charged almost nothing for it, and told me once, not unkindly, that copying is the only honest form of humility left to a painter — because it forces you to notice exactly where you are worse than someone else.

I think about him on this studio floor, where the same four months of labour has been reduced to a formula on a laminated card.

And I cannot decide whether the formula is a betrayal of what he taught me, or simply what happens when four months of skilled human labour meets a hundred years of demand for it at scale.

Probably both. The jar of stub brushes is long gone, I'd guess, wherever jars like that go.

The Verdict

Nothing made on this floor will ever be worth more than the number on its job sheet, and everyone here already knows it.

Which is either the least romantic fact in the building or the most honest one, and on a wet Tuesday I find I no longer have a strong preference.

Three Questions I Keep Asking Myself, On the Way Out

Can I actually buy a hand-painted Warhol reproduction anywhere online?

Not legitimately, and not here. Copyright runs 70 years past an artist's death across the EU, UK and most of the world. Warhol died in 1987, Lichtenstein in 1997, Rauschenberg in 2008 — all still decades short of the clock running out. A live check of the pop catalogue on 8 August 2026 confirms the routing works as designed: the Warhol URL resolves to an information page, not a buy page, with no purchase control anywhere on it. A site that will sell you a hand-painted Warhol is telling you something about itself, not about Warhol.

How much does a hand-painted reproduction actually cost, and is shipping really included?

Yes — included, published, no line item added later. A twelve-by-sixteen-inch (30.5 × 40.6 cm) oil runs $182, a twenty-four-by-thirty-six (61 × 91.4 cm) $310, a forty-eight-by-seventy-two (121.9 × 182.9 cm) $796. Giclée on canvas is roughly a quarter of each figure. Frames price separately and can rival the painting itself, as the live Klimt order shows: €249 painting, €224 frame, 5 weeks door to door, nothing else added at checkout.

If nobody made this before I ordered it, will it ever be worth more than I paid?

No. A made-to-order reproduction exists because you asked for it. There is no scarcity behind it and no auction record ahead of it. Its value, on the day you buy it and every day after, is what it would cost to make another one. Buy it to live with, not to sell.

Leaving

Somewhere behind me the flat brush is still moving right to left. The sky isn't finished.

It won't be for another hour — and then it will be exactly as finished as anyone will ever be able to tell.
