A life shaped by the river and the street

Clarence Millet began his working days far from a canvas, laboring as a store clerk in New Orleans before his hands found their way to the tools of engraving. Born in Hahnville, Louisiana, he moved to the city at seventeen, where an apprenticeship in an engraving company provided a foundation of technical precision. He later sought formal training at Tulane University and eventually traveled to New York to study at the Art Students League under George Bridgman. This period of study brought him into contact with the rigors of anatomy and construction, even as he often spoke of himself as largely self-taught.

By 1925, he had returned to New Orleans, settling into a studio in the Vieux Carré. His workspace was situated near the edge of Exchange Alley, sharing a building with other artists like Alexander Drysdale. In those early years, his output included small woodblock prints and souvenir pictures intended for the local tourist trade. He lived through the era of the Works Progress Administration, contributing to the easel division as a commissioned painter during the 1930s.

The light of the French Quarter

His paintings often focused on the specific textures of the Deep South. He looked closely at the architecture of the old French Quarter and the way sunlight filtered through foliage in places like the courtyard of the Court of Two Sisters. His brushwork followed a path influenced by American Impressionists, using visible strokes and a highly keyed palette to capture light effects. He preferred to paint what he could see and feel, focusing on the movement of nature and the quiet life of the region.

The subjects he chose were often tied to the landscape of Louisiana:

      • Rain-drenched mornings in Jackson Square.
      • Windy days along the Mississippi River shanties.
      • The bustling atmosphere of the French Market.
      • Rural scenes of plantations, bayous, and fields.

In his maritime works, such as his depictions of the barque Nueva Borinquen, he captured the details of vessels and the rhythmic movement of the sea. These pieces often utilized a realistic approach to honor the tradition of marine art, rendering ships with careful attention to their forms against the horizon.

      Recognition and legacy

While his roots remained in the South, Millet’s work reached much larger audiences. He exhibited at the New Orleans Art Guild and in prominent New York venues like the National Academy of Design and the Montross Gallery. In 1943, he achieved a significant professional milestone when he was elected as an associate to the National Academy of Design. This was a rare distinction for a Southern artist at that time.

He remained an active figure in the local art community, helping to establish the New Orleans Art League and teaching evening classes at the New Orleans School of Art. His paintings documented a way of life in Louisiana that was gradually changing, capturing the atmosphere of a bygone era through his focus on historic buildings, bridges, and river views. He passed away in New Orleans, leaving behind a body of work that remains tied to the streets and landscapes of his home.
