      Early Life, Family and Training

Evgeni Katsman was born in 1890 in the Ukrainian town of Kharkiv. He grew up in a family headed by a minor Jewish artisan. Life was often difficult for his parents, who struggled to make ends meet. Seeking better opportunities for his children, his father eventually moved the family to Saratov, though financial hardship continued to follow them. It was during these lean years that Evgeni found his calling, influenced by his elder brother, Vladimir. Vladimir had already begun his own path in art after being accepted to the Bogolubovski Drawing School.

Following his brother's lead, Evgeni also attended the Bogolubovski Drawing School for several years. This early training provided the foundation for his developing skills. In 1906, he moved to St. Petersburg to further his studies. He enrolled in the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, hoping to refine his technique in the city's artistic center. However, his time there was cut short. In 1907, he was expelled from the school, a sudden disruption to his formal education.

Leadership in the Association of Artists

In 1922, Katsman became a central figure in the evolving Soviet art scene when he helped found the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia. This group, which later became known as the Association of Artists of the Revolution, remained active until 1933. He was not merely a member but a driving force behind the organization, serving for a significant period as its general secretary. His involvement helped shape the framework for the socialist realism style that would come to define much of the era's output.

His work within the association was deeply practical and organizational. He acted as a permanent coordinator, managing the logistics of exhibitions, forums, and creative workshops. Katsman also oversaw the group's itineraries, ensuring that the association's presence was felt across the country through various creative excursions and organized activities. This administrative dedication helped maintain the group's influence as one of the most powerful creative organizations of its time.

      Patrons, Sitter and Commissions

Katsman’s life as a painter often brought him into the presence of the era's most influential figures. His reputation as a portraitist allowed him to sit with and capture the likenesses of prominent individuals, including F. E. Dzerzhinski, M. I. Kalinin, and M. V. Frunze. His studio also welcomed E. M. Yaroslavsky, K. E. Voroshilov, and the writer L. M. Leonov, all of whom served as sitters for his work.

These connections placed him at the center of significant historical circles. In 1926, he traveled to Kuokkala, Finland, to visit the painter Ilya Repin. His proximity to power was further evidenced in July 1933, when K. E. Voroshilov invited him, along with other leaders of the AKhRR, to visit Stalin at his dacha outside of Moscow.

      Later Years, Legacy and Death

The later decades of Katsman's life were marked by significant professional recognition within the Soviet art establishment. In 1947, he was named a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. His influence and standing in the art community continued to grow for many years, eventually leading to him being named a People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1969.

Beyond his visual output, Katsman sought to preserve his experiences and reflections through writing. In 1962, he published a book of memoirs titled "Notes of an Artist," which offered a personal look into his life and the era in which he worked. This written record provides a rare glimpse into the perspective of a man who had been at the center of major artistic movements.

Evgeni Alexandrovich Katsman died on July 31, 1976, in Moscow. His artistic legacy remains visible in major institutions, with his works included in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His presence in these permanent collections ensures that his contributions to the history of painting continue to be studied and seen.
