The Life and Career of Henri Linssen

Born in Roermond, Limburg, on 28 October 1805, Henri Linssen was a Dutch painter whose life was deeply connected to the Netherlands. Known also by his full names, Frans Hendrik Linssen and François Henri Linssen, he spent his early years in the region before his professional path took him across borders. His identity as an artist was shaped by the various cities where he lived and worked, moving through different cultural centers during the mid-nineteenth century.

Linssen's career was marked by a steady presence in the European art scene. After spending time in Antwerp, he moved to Paris, where he spent many years studying and developing his craft. During this period, he was able to exhibit his work at the Salon between 1834 and 1840. These years in France were a significant chapter in his life, allowing him to engage with the artistic traditions of the time before eventually returning to his roots in the Netherlands.

In 1843, Linssen returned to Roermond, the city of his birth. He took on a role as the director of the Stadstekenschool, a municipal drawing school, where he influenced local instruction until his retirement in 1861. He remained in Roermond for the rest of his life, eventually passing away there on 8 April 1869.

      Activity in Antwerp and Paris

Linssen’s professional life took him across borders during his younger years. Between 1824 and 1828, he was active in Antwerp, establishing his presence in the city. This period of work provided a foundation before he made the significant move to Paris in 1830. In the French capital, he dedicated himself to his studies, seeking to refine his skills within a major center of artistic activity.

His time in Paris was long and productive, lasting until 1843. During these years, he found opportunities to present his work to a wider audience. Between 1834 and 1840, he exhibited at the Salon, participating in the formal exhibitions that defined the era. This decade of activity in Paris marked a central chapter in his career before he eventually returned to his roots in Roermond.
