The Life and Career of Olaf Gulbransson

Olaf Leonhard Gulbransson was a Norwegian artist, painter, and designer. His professional journey began with training at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in Christiania, Norway, from 1885 until 1893. During this formative period, he contributed to various Norwegian magazines, including Tyrihans, Pluk, Paletten, Fluesoppen, Sfinx, and Trangviksposten. In 1900, his artistic pursuits led him to study at the Académie Colarossi in Paris.

In 1902, Gulbransson moved to Germany to work for the satirical magazine Simplicissimus in Munich. His growing fame saw him drawing for Tidens tegn in Oslo, even while living in Germany between 1923 and 1927. He eventually became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, in 1929. His career included significant recognition, such as being made an honorary member of the Society of Berlin Artists in 1941 and an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 1942.

      Artistic Legacy and Illustrations

Gulbransson is perhaps best known for his caricatures and illustrations. His work extended into book illustration, notably with the children's books Det var engang (published in 1934) and Und so weiter (published in 1954). His influence is further noted through the Olaf Gulbransson Prize, which has been won by cartoonists such as Volker Kriegel and Michael Sowa.

His personal life included three marriages. His first marriage, in 1906, was to Grete Jehly, with whom he had a son, Olaf Andreas Gulbransson, a noted church architect. His third marriage was to Dagny Bjørnson, the niece of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson.
