The Life of William Henry Downes

William Henry Downes, also known as William Downes, was a prominent Irish judge who served as the Lord Chief Justice of Ireland. Born in Donnybrook, Ireland, he was the third and only surviving son of Robert Downes and Elizabeth Twigge. After being educated at Trinity College, Dublin, he was called to the Irish bar in 1776. His distinguished legal career included serving as a member of parliament for Donegal in 1790, a judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 1792, and a transfer to the Court of King's Bench in 1798. He eventually succeeded Lord Kilwarden as Lord Chief Justice of Ireland in 1803 and was created a peer in 1822.
