A Life of Expression and Resistance

Aad de Haas was a Dutch painter, medalist, graphic artist, and sculptor. Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, his life was marked by the profound experiences of the Second World War, including the bombardment of his home city and imprisonment by the occupier, who classified his work as "degenerate." Following the war, he fled with his wife to South Limburg, eventually residing in Kasteel Strijthagen in Schaesberg. His artistic output was characterized by a figurative expressionist tradition, driven by a personal need to create. His work often reflected universal themes such as religion, suffering, power, resistance, temptation, and eroticism, frequently intertwining with his own life experiences.

His legacy is notably tied to the controversy surrounding his murals in the Sint Cunibertuskerk in Wahlwiller. Completed in 1947, these stations of the cross faced ecclesiastical resistance and were removed by order of the Bishopric of Roermond, only to be returned decades later. In 1949, he was honored with the Prize from the Stichting Kunstenaarsverzet 1942-1945.
