      An Acclaimed Animalist and Academician

Alexander Schwabe was a distinguished animalist and painter of hunting scenes who received his artistic education at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. A student of the battle painter A. I. Sauerweid, he earned a small silver medal for a study from nature in 1840 and graduated from the Academy in 1843. His career was marked by significant official recognition, including being named an Academician and later a Professor of animal painting. His expertise was such that he was commissioned to paint portraits of prize-winning horses for the Emperor, and he later served the Administration of State Stud Farms and Imperial Races, where he painted horses from life.
