Johann Zoffany: Life and Legacy Early Life and Training Johann Zoffany, born Johannes Josephus Zaufallij in 1733 in Freiburg, Germany, was a painter who achieved renown primarily in England and Italy. Details of his early childhood remain scarce, but it is known he received artistic training from a young age.
