Early Life and Education Born: Kawasaki, Japan (1911) Died: 1996 Okamoto Tarō began taking lessons in oil painting from the artist Wada Eisaku in 1927. In 1929, he entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (later Tokyo University of the Arts) in the oil painting department. A family trip to Europe in 1929 led him to spend time in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Paris, where he rented a studio and enrolled at a lycée.
