A Life of Color and Instruction

Ethel Seath was a prominent figure on the Montreal art scene for sixty years. Her diverse artistic practice included work as a painter, printmaker, commercial artist, and art instructor. After finishing high school in 1896, she joined the workforce to support her mother and four siblings, spending two decades as a commercial illustrator for the Montreal Witness and the Montreal Star. Her skill in black and white drawing eventually evolved through studies with William Brymner, Maurice Cullen, and Charles Hawthorne, leading her to explore the use of bold colors.

As an educator, Seath taught at the all-girls private school, The Study, for forty-five years. Her teaching methods were progressive, seeking to liberate the imagination and spontaneity of her students. She believed that art education should help children express beauty with a spontaneous feeling and use the experience of everyday life creatively.

      Artistic Style and Group Affiliations

Seath’s oil and watercolour paintings primarily focused on still life and landscape, often exploring color and adding abstract elements to everyday scenes. Her work frequently documented domestic, rural, and urban life, characterized by a vibrant, yet earthy, color palette and distinctive, curvilinear forms. She was a founding member of the Beaver Hall Group and a member of the Canadian Group of Painters.

Throughout her career, her work was exhibited in various locations, including:

      • Baltimore, Maryland
      • Yale University, Cambridge, and Massachusetts
      • The British Empire Exhibition at Wembley, England
      • The 1939 New York World's Fair
      • The Tate in London, England

Her pieces are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
