A Life of Color and Texture

Ida Kerkovius was a Baltic German painter and weaver born in Riga, Latvia. Her artistic journey began with piano studies before she moved to a private school of art in Riga, where she developed an acute understanding of paint and color. This foundation led her to study at the Dachauer Malschule under Adolf Hölzel. Following her time there, she served as an assistant and theorist at the Königlich Württembergische Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart.

Between 1920 and 1923, Kerkovius registered at the Bauhaus, where she eventually joined the weaving workshop. Her professional life was marked by significant transitions, including the loss of her citizenship and her position at the academy during World War I. During the interwar years, her income was primarily derived from the weaving workshop and the sale of her art through dealer Hanna Bekker vom Rath.
