      Quick Facts

The Life and Art of Ignazio Hugford

Born in Pisa, Italy, Ignazio Hugford was a painter and art historian who worked primarily in Tuscany. He studied under Anton Domenico Gabbiani, a master whose style he followed in his own religious paintings and copies. Hugford’s artistic output included works such as The Annunciation and Tobias Returns Sight to his Father. His religious commissions were significant, including several canvases for the refectory of the Benedictine Abbey of Vallombrosa and an altarpiece of Saints Charles Borromeo, Philip Neri and Antonio Abate before a Crucifix located in the Pieve di S. Andrea a Doccia.

Beyond his own brushwork, Hugford was a prominent figure in the art world as a collector, dealer, and critic. He was a member of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno and taught at the Accademia di San Luca. He was also known for his involvement in the development of scagliola techniques. His extensive collection of drawings was eventually acquired by the Uffizi in 1779.
