      Jost de Laval

      1540 - 1585

The Life and Career of Jost de Laval

Born in Flanders, Belgium, in 1540, Jost de Laval carried the traditions of his homeland across the northern seas. This Flemish panel painter eventually found his true calling in the bustling city of Lübeck. He arrived there as a young man and remained an active presence in the city for many years, working as a freelance master from 1556 until his death in 1585. His presence in the local guilds and workshops marked him as a man of steady purpose and growing reputation.

As the second half of the 16th century progressed, the demand for his hand grew. Jost de Laval became a highly sought-after painter in Lübeck, finding himself frequently called upon to fulfill the needs of the local community. His life was one of constant labor and steady movement between the workshops of his youth and the established commissions of his maturity. He moved through the social fabric of the city, leaving behind a trail of painted wood that spoke to the piety and the status of those who commissioned him.

      Major Commissions and Religious Works

The life of Jost de Laval was deeply intertwined with the spiritual and civic life of Lübeck, where he found himself a sought-after hand for those wishing to honor the departed. His brush often met the demands of the church and the wealthy merchant class, translating their piety into wood and pigment. In 1567, he was entrusted with a three-winged epitaph for Domherr Laurentius Meiger, a work that allowed him to demonstrate his skill in the characteristic grisaille style upon its outer wings. This ability to capture the solemnity of death through muted tones became a hallmark of his approach to funerary art.

As his reputation grew within the city, the commissions became more frequent and varied. He turned his attention to the memorial needs of the community, crafting a tribute for Bartholomeus Tinnappel in 1575. Not long after, he was called upon to paint a memorial for Hermann Meyer, intended for the St. Petri Church. These works were not merely decorations but were central to the liturgical and social fabric of the region, ensuring that the names of the deceased remained present within the sacred spaces of the city.

The merchant class also sought his hand to secure their own legacies. In 1578, he completed an epitaph for the merchant Walter Holsten, a task that required him to balance the dignity of the subject with the religious requirements of the era. Through these various assignments, his hand moved between the quiet, monochromatic grace of his grisaille panels and the more colorful demands of religious devotion, leaving a mark on the altars and chapels of Lübeck.

      Notable Surviving and Lost Works

The fate of many of his creations was tied to the tragic events of the twentieth century. During the air raid on Lübeck on March 29, 1942, a great many of his paintings were lost to the flames. This destruction claimed much of his legacy, leaving only fragments of the vast output he once provided to the churches of the region. Before these fires, his hand could be found in many places, with works residing in the Hamburg Nikolaikirche and the Kiel Nikolaikirche, as well as in various churches across Denmark and the islands.

Among the treasures that escaped the fire, one finds his 1569 painting, The adoration of the shepherds. This work remains in the St. Katharinen church in Lübeck, offering a rare glimpse into the skill of a man who was once a highly sought-after painter in his time. It is a quiet survivor of a much larger body of work that once adorned the altars and epitaphs of the north.
