      Early Life and Artistic Training

Marcel Ysewijn enters the scene in 1921, born in Lokeren. His early years are defined by the foundational guidance of P. Gorus, who provides his first formal training. This initial instruction sets the stage for a technical evolution that moves from basic instruction toward the complexities of fine art.

The focus shifts to Ghent between 1941 and 1945. During these years, Ysewijn enters the Academy to study both painting and graphics. He works under the direction of Jos Verdegem and H. Malfait, absorbing the formal rigors of their instruction. This period of study forms the backbone of his technical capability as a Belgian painter and graphic artist.

      Professional Career and Exhibitions

Between 1947 and 1981, Ysewijn maintained a steady professional presence as a decorative painter. This period of work coincided with a series of significant institutional recognitions and public appearances. In 1954, he participated in the Four Years' Salon in Ghent. By 1956, his standing in the regional art scene was solidified when he was selected for the East Flanders Provincial Prize for Painting.

His work moved through various thematic exhibitions throughout the later decades of the twentieth century. He was included in the 1979 exhibition 'The bread in Belgian art' and the 1982 exhibition 'The Animism in Belgian art'. The reach of his work extended beyond local circles, appearing in 'Painters van de Zee' at the church in Vinkem in 1989 and in the 'Old, Modern and Contemporary Art' exhibition in Brussels in 1990. In 1995, his presence was noted internationally during the 'Arts from Belgium' exhibition in Göteborg, Sweden.

      Exhibitions in Various Galleries

The gallery circuit in Ghent becomes a recurring setting for his work. In 1956, he presents his art at gallery Parnasse. This same year marks his first appearance at gallery Vyncke-Van Eyck. He returns to Vyncke-Van Eyck in 1962, maintaining a presence in the city's art scene. By 1967, the focus shifts to gallery Foncke in Ghent.

Beyond the city limits of Ghent, his work finds a place in Lokeren at Kunstgalerie De Vuyst. These exhibitions place his compositions and still lifes within the specific regional contexts of Belgian art. His presence in these spaces marks a steady professional trajectory through the mid-twentieth century.
