A painter whose career was tragically truncated by death at the tender age of twenty-six, he nonetheless managed to leave an indelible mark on the maritime aesthetic of his era. Born in 1852, likely in the Italian cities of Florence or Naples, Altamouras carried within him a complex
lineage of artistic passion and personal hardship. His father, the Italian painter Francesco Saverio Altamura, provided the initial spark of talent but famously abandoned the family when Ioannis was only seven years old. This early abandonment left the young artist to be raised by his mother, Eleni Boukoura-Altamoura, a prominent aristocrat and a pioneering female painter from Spetses.
