A Life Between Sea and Canvas

Robert Geenens was a Belgian painter, graphic artist, and designer of theater sets and murals. Born in Ghent, he spent much of his life traveling the world as an officer on merchant ships, including the vessel L'Avenir and ships of the Compagnie Maritime Belge. During the First World War, he spent time in the Netherlands, where he had the opportunity to study at the Rotterdam Academy of Art. Following the war, he studied at the Academy in Ghent before returning to the sea. In 1930, he ended his career as a long-distance officer to dedicate himself entirely to art, eventually settling in Antwerp.

      Artistic Vision and Style

Geenens situated himself within the movement of Magic Realism and was a co-founder of the "Fantasmagie" movement in 1958. His work often explored the boundaries between dream, fantasy, and reality, moving between abstract and figurative styles. His subjects included:

His imaginative landscapes frequently incorporated symbolic elements, such as an eagle or a mystical female figure. Beyond his paintings, he was a prolific designer, creating theater sets and decorative murals for locations including the Casa da Portugal and the Brazilian consulate in Antwerp. In 1950, he was awarded the Constant Montald Prize for his decoration design "De Oogst."
