A Life of Letters and Thought

Samuel Butler was an English novelist, critic, and philosopher. Born in Langar, Nottinghamshire, he was the son of Rev. Thomas Butler. His early life included an education at Rugby and Cambridge, where he earned a first in Classics. Following his time in London, he emigrated to New Zealand, living as a sheep farmer on Mesopotamia Station before returning to England.

His literary career is marked by several notable works:

      • The satirical utopian novel Erewhon
      • The semi-autobiographical novel The Way of All Flesh
      • Prose translations of the Iliad and Odyssey

      Scientific and Philosophical Inquiries

Butler engaged deeply with evolutionary thought, writing several books that explored biological processes, including Life and Habit and Evolution, Old and New. While he accepted evolution, he rejected Darwin's theory of natural selection, favoring ideas related to Lamarckism. His writings also touched upon theology, exploring concepts such as panzoism and the nature of a deity.

Beyond literature and science, Butler showed an interest in Italian art and landscapes, producing works such as Alps and Sanctuaries of Piedmont and the Canton Ticino. He also composed choral musical works, such as the cantatas Narcissus and Ulysses, in collaboration with Henry Festing Jones.
