      Life and Artistic Development

Born in Hersbruck, Germany, Walter Raum was the son of Michael and Kunigunde Raum, who operated a painting craft business. After completing an apprenticeship as a decorative painter, he was drafted into military service in 1941. His experiences as a soldier, including being wounded in the Spessart in 1945, left a lasting impression on his subsequent creative work. Following the war, Raum pursued formal studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg, the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.

In 1954, he began working as a freelance painter in Munich. His early career saw significant recognition through invitations to prestigious international exhibitions, including the 29th Venice Biennale in 1958, the 1st Biennale de Paris in 1959, and the 21st International Watercolor Biennale in New York in 1960. In 1965, he moved to a house near Lake Starnberg in Achmühle, which served as both his residence and studio for the remainder of his life.

      Artistic Style and Evolution

Raum's body of work evolved through several distinct phases. His early period was characterized by Informel, featuring gestural-expressive and non-objective painting. This later transitioned into more object-like works, utilizing thick impasto, earthy tones, sand, and textiles to create mysterious landscapes. From 1965, his experimental canvas works began to incorporate pure colors and script-like characters, often featuring abstract compositions where objects appeared within the frame.

During the late 1960s and through the mid-1980s, drawing became a primary medium for Raum, used both as a conceptual tool and as an autonomous art form. His later works included several notable series:

Throughout his career, Raum frequently utilized skripturale elements, such as text fragments, calligraphy, and collaged newspaper clippings, to integrate the outside world and historical events into his compositions.
