A Life Dedicated to the Orient

Born in Neuruppin, Germany, Wilhelm Gentz was a painter whose artistic journey was deeply shaped by his travels. After studying at the Academy in Antwerp and later in Paris, he turned his focus toward oriental subjects. His fascination with the East was solidified during a significant journey to Spain and Morocco, which eventually led him to Egypt and Nubia. During his time in Egypt, he lived like an Arab and learned the language, experiences that profoundly influenced his work. His travels took him through various regions, including Malta, Asia Minor, the Greek Archipelago, Constantinople, and Tunisia, allowing him to capture the character of different lands and peoples through a masterful use of color and light.
