Early Life and Training
Mohammed Seif al-Din Wanly, an Egyptian painter, was born on March 31, 1906, in Alexandria, Egypt, into a Turkish aristocratic family. His artistic journey began with studying at the studio of Italian artist Otorino Becchi. This exposure to European art techniques would later influence his introduction of modern art to Egypt. He grew up with his four sisters and his younger brother, Adham, in an intellectual francophone environment. They were educated by private tutors in their family house, the Urfan Pacha Palace located in the neighborhood of Muharram Bey in Alexandria. Seif worked as a public official at the customs archives of Alexandria and started painting with his brother, Adham. In 1929, Ottorino Becchi (1878 - 1949), an Italian painter from Livorno, opened a studio in Alexandria and the Wanly brothers were among his first students. After Becchi left Egypt in 1934, Seif and Adham established their own studio in Alexandria the following year together with their friends, the painter Ahmad Fahmi and the filmmaker Mohammed Bayoumi.
Artistic Career and Notable Works
In 1942, Wanly established his own studio alongside his brother Adham Wanly, marking the beginning of a prolific career. Together, they participated in over 17 exhibitions, including the prestigious Biennale of Venice and an exhibition in São Paulo, Brazil. - **Late 1950s Nubian Project**: A notable governmental project saw Wanly travel to Nubia to document culture and conditions before the construction of the Aswān High Dam. This series of paintings and drawings captured life in Upper Egypt, providing a unique glimpse into the region’s pre-modern era. - **Exhibitions and Collections**: Today, an entire floor of the Mahmoud Said Museum in Alexandria is dedicated to Seif and Adham Wanly.
