A Life of Color and Duty

Born in Megantic, Quebec, Randolph Stanley Hewton lived a life that moved between the quiet intensity of the studio and the heavy responsibilities of industry and war. His early years in Lachine, near Montreal, provided the foundation for a creative spirit that would later seek the light of Paris. Through the Wood Scholarship, he found his way to the Art Association of Montreal to study under William Brymner, a connection that set his path toward the Académie Julian. In the studios of Paris, between 1908 and 1913, he encountered the French school of painting and met A.Y. Jackson, a friendship that would link their artistic fates for years to come.

The peace of his artistic development was interrupted by the Great War. Hewton did not merely observe the conflict from afar; he enlisted in the 24th Battalion and later transferred to the 7th London Regiment. During the Somme offensive in 1918, he displayed a bravery that earned him the Military Cross. Even amidst the devastation of the battlefield, his eye remained fixed on the visual truth, producing vigorous drawings of the landscape during brief moments of leave. These sketches captured a stark reality that few others could articulate.

      The Painter and the Businessman

Returning to Canada, Hewton faced a dual existence. He was a man of commerce as much as a man of the brush. He took up work with Miller Brothers, a paper box manufacturing firm, eventually rising to become the company president in 1921. This period of leadership required him to manage the movement of his business to Glen Miller, Ontario, in 1933. Yet, the pull of the canvas remained constant. He balanced the demands of the mill with the pursuit of figure and landscape painting, often finding inspiration in the very landscapes he traversed for work.

His artistic circle was composed of notable figures and fellow creators. Alongside A.Y. Jackson and Albert Robinson, he sought out the rugged beauty of the Canadian terrain. He painted the snowscapes of Quebec, the riverbanks of the St. Lawrence, and the quiet corners of La Malbaie. His work often focused on the human form, blending traditional fundamentals with a modern sensibility. Some of his most noted subjects included:

      • Portraits of his wife, Isobel Monk, such as the work Benedicta.
      • Studies of the nude and the figure in studio settings.
      • Landscapes of the Laurentians and the Murray River.
      • Genre scenes involving farmers and rural life.

A Legacy in Paint and Leadership

Hewton was a central figure in the organized art community of his time. He helped establish the Beaver Hall Group in 1920 and was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters in 1933. His professional standing was recognized through his election as an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1921 and later full membership in 1934. He also shared his knowledge as a teacher, serving as the director and senior painting instructor at the Art Association of Montreal School of Art.

His ability to use color—often described through his reputation as a colorist—allowed him to capture the atmosphere of changing seasons, from the bright light of summer to the heavy stillness of winter. His paintings now reside in significant institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. When he passed away in Trenton, Ontario, he left behind a body of work that bridged the gap between the classical influences of his Parisian training and the emerging identity of Canadian landscape and portraiture.
