David Hockney sündis Ühenduskonus, Bradfordis, ning kasvas viisilise lastega peres. Tema isa, Kenneth Hockney, töötas arvulise kliperina ning oli Teise maailmasõja ajal veisnud kantsellist vastupanu, samal ajal kui tema ema, Laura, oli metodist ja rangus vegetarian.
