Emma Gylden was born in Helsinki, Finland, on 17 April 1835. She grew up in a household shaped by the administrative work of her father, Claes Wilhelm Gyldén, who held the position of Real Council and Director of Land Survey. Her mother was Amalia Sofia Danielson. These early years in Helsinki provided the foundation for a life spent observing the nuances of the landscape.
Her formal training began at the drawing school of the Finnish Art Society. There, she studied under Berndt Godenhjelm, learning the technical discipline required to translate the natural world onto canvas. This period of study focused on the essential mechanics of form and light. By 1854, she made her exhibition debut, marking her first public presence as a painter.
In 1870, Emma married her cousin, Fabian Wilhelm von Schantz, in Vanaja. The marriage remained childless. Their life together was marked by the quiet rhythms of the era, moving through the social circles of the time. By 1870, she had also taken the name Emma von Schantz.
Her time in Helsinki was cut short. She died in the city on 8 July 1874, at the age of 39, from a lung disease. She was laid to rest at the Hietaniemi cemetery in Helsinki.
Her brushwork often turned toward the quiet details of the Finnish landscape. One such piece, a landscape from the Pori Region, dates to about 1850. This early work shows a focus on the natural surroundings that would define much of her output. She had a way of capturing the specific light and terrain of the regions she observed, moving between the study of formal composition and the direct observation of the land.
Another significant work is titled Maisema Hämeestä. This painting is part of the collection held by the Finnish National Gallery in Helsinki. It remains one of the pieces that represents her contribution to the landscape tradition. The Finnish National Gallery maintains this work, ensuring its place within the country's visual record. Her ability to translate the textures of the Finnish countryside into oil on canvas remains her most tangible legacy.
