      The Life of Carl Vinnen

Carl Vinnen was a German landscape painter who was also a writer on various topics of local interest, using the pseudonym Johann Heinrich Fischbeck. Born in Bremen, he initially worked for his father's shipping company after finishing school. At age twenty-three, he began studying at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Heinrich Lauenstein and Hugo Crola, and also took private lessons from Eugen Dücker. In 1888, he continued his studies in Karlsruhe.

Vinnen was associated with the creation of the Künstlervereinigung Worpswede, helping to promote the works of artists such as Fritz Mackensen and Otto Modersohn. While he did not live in the colony, he maintained a studio at his family estate in Osterndorf. His travels took him throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. In 1908, he moved from Osterndorf to Cuxhaven, where he focused on maritime motifs.

      Later Years and Achievements

In 1903, Vinnen was awarded a small gold medal at the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung and became a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund. He later moved to Munich, where he kept a second home during World War I. In 1919, he married his longtime fiancée, Anna Lagemann.

Vinnen's life included several notable milestones:

      • He led a protest in 1911 against the growing influence of French art following an acquisition by the Kunsthalle Bremen.
      • He published several manifestos regarding this subject.
      • He passed away in Munich following a second stroke.
