A somber arrangement of symbolic objects rests upon a weathered stone pedestal, set against a backdrop of heavy, dark drapery and a classical column. The composition centers on stone tablets inscribed with Roman numerals, specifically IV and VI, partially obscured by a deep blue cloth. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, Johan Pasch was a painter, etcher, and decorative artist. He began his artistic journey studying under his father, Danckwardt Pasch, until 1724, after which he became a journeyman painter. His professional path included several study trips to Holland and Paris. In 1734, he was certified as a Master after taking over his father's workshop. He was among the first students at the newly founded Kungliga Ritareakademien, where he studied drawing with Guillaume Taraval. His professional connections included working with the architect Carl Hårleman and serving as Taraval's teaching assistant. Pasch was appointed a Court painter in 1748 and later held the position of Hovintendent in 1758.
Pasch's career was marked by significant decorative projects and international travel. He worked on the ceiling decorations at Stockholm Palace alongside Domenico Francia and Alessandro Ferretti. Following a petition by Hårleman, he was exempted from paying taxes. In 1755, he undertook an extensive study trip to Rome and Paris, accompanied by the architect Jean Eric Rehn, traveling through Berlin, Vienna, Holland, and Denmark. His later works included decorations for the Queen at Svartsjö Palace, projects at Åkerö Manor, Erstavik Mansion, and the Chinese Pavilion. Between 1765 and 1768, he created a series of allegorical panels at Drottningholm Palace. His canvases are held in collections such as the Uppsala University Library and the Nationalmuseum.
