Madsen was a central figure among the Skagen Painters, having arrived in the fishing village of Skagen during a transformative period in Danish culture. His work from the late 19th century demonstrates a vitality in his portraits, and his time in Paris saw him influenced by the Barbizon school. His personal life was marked by both tragedy and family connections to the arts. He was married twice, first to Johanne Henriette Møller and later to Thora Juliane Nielsen. His children included a painter, Svend Viggo Madsen, and an egyptologist, Henry Sofus Madsen.
