      Artistic Background and Career

Koen Vermeule is a Dutch painter and draftsperson born in Goes, Netherlands. His formal artistic training began in 1983 at the Tehatex in Tilburg, where he completed his studies in 1988. He later attended the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam from 1990 to 1992. Throughout his career, Vermeule has received several honors, including the Charlotte-Köhler-Preis in 1994 and the Sacha Tanja Kunstpreis in 2017. He currently lives and works in Amsterdam and serves as a lecturer at the ArtEZ Academie voor Art & Design Enschede, having also held guest lecturer positions at various academies such as the Rietveld Academie Amsterdam, the Academie Minerva Groningen, and the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten Den Haag.

      Style and Subject Matter

Vermeule’s work encompasses oil and acrylic paintings on canvas, as well as gouaches. His compositions generally fall into two categories: depictions of people, often youths, within public spaces, and expansive, flat landscapes characterized by a distant horizon. His landscape motifs frequently feature large bodies of water, beaches, dunes, and the deeply furrowed earth of fields. His technique is marked by a painterly application of color, utilizing frayed brushstrokes or blurred gradients that often correspond with unrealistic color palettes, such as black skies or green waves.

When portraying figures, he often depicts individuals or small groups in various states of interaction or solitude. These subjects may be shown lying down or facing the viewer, with their relationships expressed through posture, gesture, facial expressions, and the physical distance between them. A recurring detail in his work is the presence of portable electronic devices, such as laptops or smartphones, used by the subjects.
