      Early Life, Family and Training

Pietro Negri enters the Venetian scene in 1628. His origins remain a matter of archival debate. While early sources identify his father as a sculptor named Domenico Negri, other documents offer different names, citing Lunardo or Francesco. Regardless of the specific lineage, the setting is firmly Venice, the crucible of his development.

The training of Pietro Negri follows a structured path through the Venetian tradition. His first formal art lessons come from Matteo Ponzone. This foundational period shapes his early hand before he moves into more collaborative environments. He later works alongside Francesco Ruschi, refining his technique through direct association with established practitioners.

      Key Works and Masterpieces

The shadows of the tenebrosi style find a heavy presence in Negri's historical compositions. In the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, Nerone che esamina il corpo di Agrippina captures a moment of grim scrutiny. This tension between light and darkness defines much of his output, a quality also visible in the Bavarian State Painting Collections through the history painting Tod der Lucretia.

Negri’s scale often matched the architectural ambitions of Venice. In 1673, he executed a monumental telero for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Located on the left wall of the staircase, the work depicts Mark the Evangelist and Saint Rocco interceding with the Virgin Mary to end the plague. This massive canvas sits in direct dialogue with the works of Zanchi, anchoring the space with its religious gravity. Earlier, in 1670, he contributed to the visual landscape of the basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari with the Albero serafico dei Ordini francescani.

The stillness of mortality appears in his 1662 oil on canvas, Vanitas, currently held in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. Here, the focus shifts from grand religious narratives to the quiet, unsettling symbols of existence. His ability to navigate both the monumental and the intimate remains central to his surviving legacy.

      Later Years and Death

Personal life and domestic shifts define his final decade. He married Franceschina Maria Barbara, a union that produced two sons. Her life ended shortly after the birth of their second child, leaving him a widower. By 1673, he entered a second marriage, wedding Angela Caroli, the widow of a merchant.

The end came in Venice. On 31 May 1679, Pietro Negri died, likely from tuberculosis. His widow arranged for his interment in the Church of Saint Augustine. The building itself would eventually face demolition in 1873, long after it had served as a mill.
