      Historiallinen merkitys ja perintö

      Claude Lorrainin vaikutus maisemamaalaukseen on mittaamaton. Hän nosti genren sille arvostukselle, joka oli aiemmin varattu vain historiallisille ja uskonnollisille aiheille. Hänen teoksensa vaikuttivat sukupolvien taiteilijoihin, mukaan lukien J.M.W. Turner ja impressionistit, jotka pyrkivät vangitsemaan valon ja ilmakehän katoavia vaikutuksia.       Myöhäisvuodet ja kuolema

      Claude Lorrain kuoli 23. marraskuuta 1682 Roomassa. Hänen hautakivessään San Luigi dei Francesin kirkossa on yksinkertainen kaiverrus: ”Claude / peintre de / rome / mort / le 23 novembre 1682”. Hän jätti jälkeensä perinnön yhtenä länsimaisen taidehistorian tärkeimmistä ja vaikutusvaltaisimmista maisemamaalareista.
