John Singleton Copley: the painter's story

      Varhaisluonnos, perhe ja taiteellinen kasvu

John Singleton Copley syntyi vuonna 1738, ja hänen juurensa kumpusivat siirtomaa-ajan Bostonin kaupallisesta vilinästä ja päättäväisyydestä. Hänen kasvunsa oli tiukasti kytköksissä Long Wharfin merenkulun maailmaan, jossa hänen äitinsä, Mary Singleton Copley, pyöritti kauppaa.

Hänen asiakaskuntansa laajuus heijastaa koloniaalisen johtajuuden muuttuvaa luonnetta.

Jo kauan ennen lähtöään hänen lahjakkuutensa oli herättänyt huomiota Lontoossa; hänet valittiin Royal Society of Artists of Great Britain -seuran jäseneksi 3. syyskuuta 1766.

Hänen varhainen kiinnostuksensa klassisia teemoja kohtaan näkyy teoksessa The Return of Neptune, joka on maalattu noin vuonna 1754. Tämä teos osoittaa varhaisen pyrkimyksen ylittää Bostonin eliitin pelkät muotokuvat hyödyntämällä vanhojen mestareiden sommittelua. Jopa hänen henkilökohtaisemmissa kuvauksissaan, kuten vuonna 1776 syntyneessä teoksessa The Copley Family, on havaittavissa selkeä pyrkimys käyttää kangasta tietyn sosiaalisen identiteetin rakentamiseen huolellisesti koreografioitujen ympäristöjen ja esineiden avulla.

Noin vuonna 1778 maalattu Watson and the Shark ilmentää tätä pyrkimystä kohti dramaattista jännitystä. Hänen kunnianhimoisin hankkeensa tässä suuntaus oli The Death of Major Peirson, teos, joka yritti vangita Jerseytaistelun kaaoksen. Vaikka jotkut kriitikot kyseenalaistivat sommittelun, maalaus säilyy merkittävänä yrityksenä kääntää nykyaikainen konflikti historiallisen taiteen suuren mittakaavan kielelle.

Lontoon myöhemmät vuodet toivat tullessaan monimutkaisia poliittisia kohtauksia, kuten vuonna 1779 syntyneen The Colapse of the Earl of Chatham in the House of Lords.

Hänen vainajansa haudattiin Croydon Minsteriin, Surreyen kreivikuntaan. Vaikka hänen uransa päättyi taloudelliseen ahdinkoon, hänen tekninen tarkkuutensa säilyy kiistattomana kiintopisteenä 1700-luvun muotokuvataiteen ja historiallisten sommitelmien tutkimuksessa.
