      Wolf Hoffmann: elämä maalauksessa

      Life and Artistic Journey

Born in Wernigerode, Germany, Wolf Hoffmann was the son of the writer and Secretary General of the German Schiller Foundation, Hans Hoffmann. His early education included attending the Prussian Cadet School, and he served as a soldier in France during the First World War. His formal artistic training began at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Berlin-Charlottenburg, where he studied in the architecture class from 1919 to 1922 before turning his focus toward painting and printmaking. In 1935, he returned to the Kunstgewerbeschule to study in the ceramics class.

The course of his life was marked by significant loss; in 1937, fourteen of his works were confiscated and destroyed by the Nazi regime as part of the "Degenerate Art" action. Later, during the Allied air raids on Berlin, his residence on Kurfürstenstraße 126 was destroyed, resulting in the loss of almost all his works. Following 1945, Hoffmann began a new chapter, eventually receiving a teaching assignment for etching and free graphics at the Berlin University of the Arts in 1950, where he held a professorship until his retirement. He was married to the actress Karin Evans and lived in the Berlin artists' colony. He died in Berlin following a car accident.
