Wu Xizai was a philologist and student of Bao Shichen. Wu, like Zhao Zhiqian was an avid admirer and practitioner of seal carving, and the dramatic tension of his robust solids and voids, fitting like pieces of a puzzle into a tightly organized surface, brings the seal carver"s aesthetic into landscape painting.
