Olaf Isaachsen
Olaf Wilhelm Isaachsen was a Norwegian landscape and genre painter. Born in Mandal, Vest-Agder county, Norway, he belonged to an affluent and educated merchant family from Kjos in Kristiansand. His studies included time at the Royal School of Drawing, where he studied under Joachim Frich and Johannes Flintoe. He also studied in Düsseldorf from 1854 to 1859, and in Paris under Thomas Couture and Gustave Courbet between 1859 and 1862.
His artistic style reflected naturalism and, in later years, impressionism. As a colourist, he painted motives of the coast landscape of Southern Norway and a wide range of portraits. He also found expression in Setesdalen, painting works that reflected the valley's culture. His works are represented in the National Museum in Oslo and the Regional Museum in Kristiansand, Sørlandets Kunstmuseum.
