The Life and Family of Abraham Alewijn

Born in Amsterdam in 1673, Abraham Alewijn was a man deeply rooted in the fabric of his city. He was the son of Abraham Alewijn and Elisabeth Reijnst, and his life began with his baptism in Amsterdam on June 14, 1673. While he is remembered for his brushwork, his daily life was shaped by significant professional responsibilities within the Dutch Republic. He served as a director of den Levantschen handel in 1701 and later held the position of advocaat der Oost-Indische Compagnie from 1716 until his death.

His personal life was marked by a long-standing connection to Wilhelmina Margaretha Lestevenon. The two were betrothed in Amsterdam on April 9, 1700, and eventually married, building a life together in the same city where he was born. Their union was part of a social landscape that saw Abraham Alewijn balance his legal and commercial duties with his interests as an amateur painter.

Abraham Alewijn remained a resident of Amsterdam throughout his years, navigating the complexities of trade and law alongside his creative pursuits. He passed away in Amsterdam on February 15, 1735, leaving behind a legacy tied to the maritime and commercial spirit of the era.

      Notable Marine Paintings and Collections

While his professional life was tied to the commerce of the Levant and the Dutch East India Company, Alewijn’s hand found expression through his work as an amateur painter. His most significant contribution to the visual record of the era is the oil on panel work titled Marine Pageant on the Y off Amsterdam. Created in 1701, this piece offers a glimpse into the maritime activity that defined the Dutch Republic during his lifetime.

The painting measures 116 x 147 cm and remains a preserved part of the Rijksmuseum collection in Amsterdam. It is cataloged under the accession number SK-A-1726. Through this work, the viewer sees the specific energy of the Y river, a vital artery for the ships and trade that shaped his home city. The scale of the panel allows for a detailed look at the vessels and the water, capturing a moment of maritime life from over three centuries ago.
