The Life and Training of Charles Hoguet
Born in Berlin, Germany, to a family of Huguenot descent, Charles Hoguet was the son of Michel François Hoguet and Emilie Hoguet-Vestris. His artistic journey began in his hometown, where he studied painting under Wilhelm August Krause at the Academy of Arts starting in 1839. Seeking further refinement, the eighteen-year-old traveled to Paris in 1840. During his time in France, he studied under Eugène Cicéri and later, from 1842, under Eugène Isabey. His technical skill and craftsmanship earned him significant recognition in France, including a gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1848.

His prolific output included 423 oil paintings, with a particular focus on marine subjects, sea coasts, the sea, Normandy, Helgoland, and still lifes. His work was frequently exhibited at academic art exhibitions in Berlin, earning him a gold medal there in 1859 and an induction into the Berlin Academy in 1869.
