A Life in Art and Transition

Heinrich Luckner was a German painter and graphic artist. Born in Kołobrzeg, Poland, he pursued his artistic education starting in 1919, studying under Fritz Pfuhle in Danzig and later with Julius Meier-Graefe at the Dresden Academy. As a student of Ludwig von Hofmann, he completed his studies in 1922. His early career saw him working as a freelance book illustrator and press illustrator. During the period between 1924 and 1929, he traveled through Italy, France, and England.

His professional journey included various exhibitions in cities such as London, Cologne, Danzig, Essen, Duisburg, and Berlin. During the era of National Socialism, he was a member of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts. His work faced challenges when certain paintings, including a portrait of Max Pechstein, were classified as "degenerate" by the authorities, leading to the seizure of two of his works from public collections in 1937.

      Later Career and Academic Contributions

Following the war, Luckner founded the lithographic establishment Sasso-Presse, which operated until 1949. During this time, his artistic focus turned toward themes from ancient Greece. In 1949, he accepted a position as a professor of pedagogy at the Hochschule der bildenden Künste in Berlin. His later years were marked by significant portraiture, capturing notable figures such as Ernst Reuter, Theodor Heuß, and Mary Wigman.

Luckner's institutional recognition included being elected as an ordinary member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin, Department of Fine Arts, in 1956. He also held honorary membership in the professional association "Bildende Künstler Berlins." After his retirement in 1957, he continued to undertake study trips to Italy and Western Europe before moving to Munich in 1961.
