      Rani život i edukacija

      Rođen oko 1600. godine u Chamagnu, malom selu u vojvodini Lorraine (današnja Francuska), Claude Lorrain – prvotno Claude Gellée – ostaje jedan od najslavnijih slikara krajolika baroknog razdoblja. Njegov rani život prekriven je velikom dozom misterije, uz proturječna svjedočanstva o njegovom učenicjstvu. Jedno izvješće, koje je napisao Joachim von Sandrart, sugerira skroman početak kao šegrt pekara za kolače prije nego što je pronašao zaposlenje među umjetnicima u Rimu. Drugo, prema Filippo Baldinucciju, detaljnije opisuje ranije školovanje u Napulju kod Goffreda Walsa, a kasnije u Rimu pod vodstvom Agostina Tassija.

      Kasni život i smrt

      Claude Lorrain preminuo je 23. studenog 1682. u Rimu. Njegov nadgrobni spomenik u crkvi San Luigi dei Francesi nosi jednostavan natpis: “Claude / peintre de / rome / mort / le 23 novembre 1682”.
