The Life and Academic Career of Raimer Jochims
Born in Kiel, Germany, Raimer Jochims is a painter, philosopher, and art scholar. After completing his Abitur at the Katharineum in Lübeck in 1955, he began his engagement with painting. As an autodidact, he studied the transparent glazes of Stefan Lochners over reflective chalk grounds. His academic journey included studying philosophy, art history, and classical archaeology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, where he earned a doctorate in philosophy in 1968 with a work on the art theorist Konrad Fiedler.
Jochims’s professional career is deeply rooted in academia. He served as a professor of painting and art theory at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main from 1971 to 1997, acting as its rector between 1971 and 1985. His teaching roles also included positions at the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe and the Kunstakademie München.
