    Rólunk ez a mű

    Untitled — Alma Thomas

Thomas was the first graduate of the Howard University art department and the first black woman to earn an MFA from Columbia University. After teaching in the Washington, D.C. public schools for 35 years, she began her professional career. She was among the color-field painters active in D.C., and in 1943, she was asked by James Vernon Herring and Alonzo Aden to join them in establishing the Barnett-Aden Gallery, the first African American gallery in that city. In 1971, when she was 80 years old, she became the first female African American artist to be recognized in a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Alma Thomas: A Life in Color

    Early Life and Education

Born: 1891 in Columbus, Georgia, Alma Woodsey Thomas was the eldest of four children. Her parents were John Harris Thomas, a businessman, and Amelia Cantey Thomas, a dress designer.

The family relocated to the Logan Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C., in 1907 due to racial violence and seeking better educational opportunities.

Early Artistic Inclinations: From a young age, Thomas displayed artistic talent, creating puppets and sculptures at home.

She attended Armstrong Technical High School, taking her first formal art classes.

Thomas pursued education at Miner Normal School (later University of the District of Columbia) from 1911 to 1913, focusing on kindergarten education.

    Career as an Educator

Thomas began her career as a substitute teacher in Maryland before securing a permanent position in 1914.

From 1916 to 1923, she taught kindergarten at the Thomas Garrett Settlement House in Wilmington, Delaware.

In 1921, she enrolled at Howard University as a home economics student but soon switched her focus to fine art under James V. Herring.

Groundbreaking Graduate: She earned her B.S. in Fine Arts from Howard University in 1924, becoming the first graduate of the university’s fine arts program.

Thomas dedicated over three decades to teaching at Shaw Junior High School (1924-1960), fostering a community arts program that included marionette performances and student-designed holiday cards for veterans.

She earned her M.A. in Art Education from Columbia University in 1934, and continued studies at American University under Jacob Kainen (1950-1960).

    Artistic Development & Influences

Early Style: Thomas’s early work was representational, but her style evolved towards abstraction through studies with Herring and Lois Mailou Jones.

Key Influences: She drew inspiration from West African paintings, Byzantine mosaics, and the color field movement.

Her exposure to the work of the New York School and Abstract Expressionism at American University significantly impacted her artistic direction.

She was inspired by Matisse’s cutouts, notably reinterpreting “The Snail” in her painting “Watusi (Hard Edge).”

    Mature Work & Artistic Style

Color Field Paintings: Thomas became known for her vibrant, abstract color field paintings characterized by pattern, rhythm, and bold use of color.

Her work often reflected themes inspired by nature, space, and music.

Notable Works: Include “Watusi (Hard Edge),” “Celestial Fantasy,” “Wind and Crepe Myrtle Concerto,” and “Sky Light.”

She frequently sought inspiration from the effects of light and atmosphere on rural environments, often driving into the countryside with friend Delilah Pierce.

    Recognition & Legacy

Late Recognition: Thomas gained significant recognition after her retirement from teaching in 1960.

Her first retrospective exhibit was held at the Gallery of Art at Howard University in 1966, curated by James A. Porter.

Groundbreaking Exhibition: In 1972, she became the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in the same year.

Thomas passed away in 1978, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering artist who defied labels and embraced her creative vision.

Historical Significance: Alma Thomas’s work challenged racial barriers within the art world and contributed significantly to the development of abstract expressionism and color field painting.

The Kinsey African American Art - History Collection

Kiállítva itt: Los Angeles, United States of America

A Sanctuary of Resilience: Unveiling The Kinsey African American Art – History Collection

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Los Angeles, The Kinsey African American Art – History Collection stands as a profoundly moving testament to the enduring spirit and extraordinary creativity of Black Americans. More than simply a museum space, it’s a meticulously curated chronicle—a living narrative woven from artistry, historical artifacts, and deeply personal stories. Founded on the lifelong dedication of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey, this remarkable collection isn't merely displayed; it’s unveiled as a journey of discovery, transforming visitors into active participants in a conversation spanning centuries.

The story begins with a simple curiosity, blossoming into an unparalleled passion for understanding and celebrating African American heritage. What started as a personal collecting endeavor quickly evolved into one of the most significant private collections globally, encompassing over 10,000 objects and fine arts dating back to the 16th century. The Kinseys weren’t passive collectors; they were seekers—actively searching for the tangible echoes of resilience, innovation, and cultural brilliance that define the African American experience. Their quest unearthed a breathtaking diversity: from rare historical documents – poignant letters penned by enslaved individuals detailing their hopes and fears, early abolitionist publications igniting calls for justice, and powerful photographs capturing moments of both struggle and triumphant victory – to vibrant paintings bursting with color and emotion, intricate sculptures commanding attention with their form and texture, and thought-provoking mixed media pieces that challenge conventional perspectives. The collection’s breadth reflects the multifaceted nature of Black artistic expression, showcasing not only renowned figures but also the voices of lesser-known artists who nonetheless contributed significantly to the movement.

Echoes of the Past, Visions of the Future

Stepping into The Kinsey Collection is akin to entering a carefully orchestrated dialogue between eras. The museum’s layout deliberately encourages contemplation and connection. Spacious galleries, bathed in natural light, provide an ideal environment for immersing oneself in these powerful works. The design isn't merely functional; it’s thoughtfully constructed to facilitate a personal journey through African American history and culture. Visitors are invited to trace the evolution of artistic expression over time, connecting with each piece on a deeply emotional level. The collection’s diverse holdings include significant pieces by James Amos Porter, a pivotal figure in establishing Black art history, Allan Randall Freelon, an influential Harlem Renaissance painter, and Mary Frances Pratt, whose photo-realist depictions offer intimate glimpses into domestic life. The Kinsey Collection also features works by Faith Willi Jones, as seen in her quilt-style painting “American Collection #4,” a vibrant celebration of jazz musicians and dancers.

A Legacy of Education and Empowerment

At its core, The Kinsey Collection is deeply committed to fostering understanding and appreciation through education. The museum actively partners with educational institutions at all levels – from elementary schools to universities – providing resources and opportunities for students and scholars alike. This commitment extends far beyond the walls of the museum itself; the collection frequently travels to other venues, bringing its message of empowerment and cultural pride to a wider audience. The Kinsey Foundation’s work is exemplified by their ongoing exhibitions, such as “Black History Month | The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection at So-Fi Stadium,” which brought this extraordinary collection to a massive public audience in 2023.

More Than a Collection: A Cultural Beacon

The impact of The Kinsey African American Art – History Collection extends far beyond its artistic merit. It serves as a vital cultural beacon, illuminating untold stories and challenging conventional narratives surrounding the American experience. It’s a space where art becomes a catalyst for dialogue, fostering empathy and understanding across communities. The collection's comprehensive approach—a holistic exploration of identity, struggle, and triumph—offers a unique perspective on history, acknowledging the significant contributions and persistent challenges faced by African Americans throughout their journey. The Kinseys’ vision has created a space where visitors can connect with their own heritage, learn from the past, and envision a more equitable future.

A Treasure for Collectors and Designers

For collectors seeking pieces imbued with profound historical significance, The Kinsey Collection offers an unparalleled opportunity. Its diverse holdings provide a window into pivotal moments in African American history, offering tangible connections to the lives and experiences of those who shaped our nation. Similarly, interior designers can draw inspiration from the collection’s rich aesthetic and powerful narratives, incorporating its spirit into spaces to create environments that are both beautiful and meaningful. The Kinsey Collection is more than just a museum; it's a testament to the enduring power of art to inspire, educate, and connect us all.
