Born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, he emerged from a family steeped in artistic tradition – his father, also Teutwart Schmitson, was an Oberstleutnant and military writer, representing Austria to the German Confederation, while his mother descended from theologian Johann Heinrich Bernhard Dräseke. Despite initial aspirations toward architecture, Schmitson swiftly gravitated towards drawing and painting as a passionate hobby, demonstrating remarkable self-discipline before formal instruction ever materialized.
